In 1867, a Kentucky author moved into the neighborhood and hired the seven Robert. "The boys contracted with Henry Cleavland to cut a ditch, in length between a half and three-quarters of a mile, which, when completed, would be a new bed of Sherrell's Creek, running through the Cleavland plantation. For the cutting of this ditch, the Robert boys, viz, Hampton, Ebben, Jabez, Floyd, Joe, Dinnis, and Alex, a western part of land containing some thirty or forty acres. One of said acres was charitably given by said brothers to the building committee, or trustees, for the erection of a meeting house. (G.W. Atkinson, The Story of Springfield Baptist Church)
The spirit of charity has woven itself through our community from those early days to the present. Together, we have built a log school, gathered firewood to keep our children warm, and come together to rebuild homes. We established a benevolent society to assist with funerals, prepared meals for weddings and church gatherings, and nurtured community gardens. Our clothing drives and donations to charities supporting the sick and orphans reflect our deep commitment to service. At Springfield, we believe in uplifting one another to help lighten each other's burdens and foster a caring, compassionate community.

Charities we contributed to and the yearly clothing drive. In 2025, we donated to Family Connection's coat drive, and in 2023, we started the Springfield Community Garden to add fresh vegetables and fresh air, along with exercise, to those who worked there
