Summer Community Organization and Political Education (SCOPE) Project | The Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute
Dr ML King Jr. solicited college students to help with voter education and registration. For this project, they were to live in the homes of Blacks and work with Rev. Hosea Williams of SCLC, local leaders, and field workers. They met for Citizen Education training and other instructions, often using the Springfield Log School as their training facility and headquarters.
The four students assigned to Crawfordville were: Candi Weber of Seattle, Washington, Judy Van Allen of California, Joseph Cooney of Washington D.C, and Richard “Dick” Chaney of Oregon.
Once the demonstrations started, some college students stayed to help teach the protesting students and later helped set up the Head Start program.
