As we continue our mission at the Springfield Community Center to preserve the history and culture of the Springfield community, we often look back at the various ways our ancestors built economic resilience. Long before modern retail, the practice of Direct Selling played a pivotal role in the development of African American entrepreneurship, allowing individuals to support their families and fund community projects through person-to-person commerce.
A Tradition of Self-Reliance In the era of the Freedom School and the early Civil Rights Movement, access to traditional brick-and-mortar storefronts was often restricted. Many in our community turned to Direct Selling as a means of economic independence.
