Henry M Turner and his wife Katie Roberts

The graveyard holds many untold stories. "Exhume those stories," Viola Davis urged in her 2017 Oscar acceptance speech.

Morehouse College, known to have begun in Augusta, Georgia, as the Augusta Institution, counts among its attendees my great grandfather, Spencer "Freeman" Turner, his brother Henry, and nephew Victor, along with others from the Springfield Community. Victor Turner and Aaron B. Murden from the community were graduates. During the pandemic, I discovered more about my lineage when writer Hank Gola reached out to me, inquiring about Hattie Mamie Turner, the daughter of Henry Turner and Katie Roberts. I am eager to share what I've learned about my family history.

For sports enthusiasts:

Hattie Mamie, the eldest daughter of Henry and Katie Roberts Turner, wed Howlett "Howard" Wright on January 31st, 1907, in Taliaferro County. Residing in Tyrone, Wilkes County, they had six children: Elizabeth, Armentha, Daisy, Floyd, Howard, and John Henry. Relocating to Ohio before the 1930s, their son Floyd took up football. He married Elinore Bailey and later moved to California, where their son Ernest Wright played for the Chargers. Ernest and Edith's son, Howard Wright, would switch from football to basketball.

The athletic pursuits of Floyd and Ernest are chronicled in Hank Gola's book, City of Champions (pg 111-115, 129).
